Simple Present

October 26th, 2012 · 1 Comment

Simple Present is a photo project by Bert Danckaert. The Belgian artist snapped mundane, empty streetscapes around the world – from New York to Beijing. Surprisingly Danckaert seems to capture the same dreary, surreal mood in every shot, regardless of the geography.

“Danckaert’s still-lifes breathe a superficial flavour, a strangeness that is found in the familiar. Coincidental installations of sidewalks, walls and street furniture refer more to minimalist art than to conventions of street photography. In these absurd scenarios a recognizable, all too banal reality appears stage-set, props and trompe-l’oeil included…” – Inge Henneman, curator of the Antwerp Photo Museum

Artist of the day: Evan Hecox

October 6th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Evan Hecox, a Denver-based designer/illustration, has a show at Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC through Saturday, Oct 10th. Hecox’s recent paintings are based on his photography of street life in foreign places but are explicitly personal, a reflection of his experience at the moment he snapped the photo. In each piece, certain details pop out through the use of color while everything else is darkened, flattened and abstracted. Hecox himself takes us through his process in the following clip:

Hecox’s current exhibit at Joshua Liner, The Last Thousand Years, is based on his travels to Vietnam (see highlights below).
