Artist Crush: Amy Wilson Faville

Carts, a colorful, mixed-media series by Amy Wilson Faville is based on actual shopping carts of the homeless in San Francisco’s Mission District. Without the real-life grittiness (the bags of garbage, salvaged junk and smells), the carts in Amy’s series reveal unexpected beauty in the melange of color, pattern and shapes.

Artist Crush: Nick Mann

Nick Mann aka Doodles’ show Astral Rise at Gallery Heist in San Francisco. You see a lot of this kind of eclectic, psychedelic, neo-folk art coming out of the Bay Area, and although it’s not my absolute favorite genre I do think the art is worth its while.

His travels have a direct relationship with his artistic practice, as though his artwork is documentation of the spiritual and physical experiences he has while traveling. His lifestyle is intertwined with his art making, obscuring the lines between both. This convergence of lifestyle and practice has placed Mann into the contemporary folk-art movement. – Gallery Heist

Tomorrow Is Not Promised

This is the sobering title of Erik Otto‘s solo show at White Walls in San Francisco (via MLFU). The themes in Otto’s show are heavy (which you probably gathered from the title): the struggle to live in the moment, the desire to slow down time and ultimately, the search for transcendence. For a behind-the-scenes interview of the very well-spoken artist on go here.

Lowbrow Art In All It’s Glory…via the Post-it

January 2nd, 2010 · No Comments

The Los Angeles-based GR2, part of the greater Giant Robot family, is currently running it’s fourth Post-It Show through Jan. 13th.

A diverse group of artists drew, colored, painted, cut up and glued Post-its, resulting in a colorful and chaotic sea of paper squares. GR2 is selling each Post-it for $20- how’s that for an entry price?

If you’re interested in purchasing a piece from the show, you can select up to four artists on the website. At the end of the show, GR2 will send you a randomly-selected Post-it by one of your preferred artists. The roster includes the very talented: APAK, Marc Bell, Jill Bliss, Jen Corace, Evah Fan, Daria Tessler, Yellena James, Saelee Oh, Luke Ramsey, and dozens more!
