Apartment Crush: Laura From Stella Mag

October 28th, 2010 · No Comments

Have you heard about Stella Magazine yet?

Well, that sold me right there.

I read about Stella and Stella founder, Laura, on Bloesem and these photos of Laura’s cool, punchy Copenhagen apartment took my breath away. Don’t the Danes and Swedes have the best style? I love Laura’s white floors, eclectic art and unabashed pops of girly pink (which look totally sophisticated against her modern furniture and graphic art and wallpaper). My copy of Stella is pre-ordered and already I’m already dying to see more of Laura and co.

decorate from the ART, Part Three!

October 11th, 2010 · 1 Comment

When it comes to decorating and finding art, a lot of people have the same questions, “Where do I start? Should my art match my furniture? Or the other way around?”

To shed some light on these questions, Kelly + Olive, super cool Chicago decorating duo, and I have teamed up for a new series, decorate from the ART. The concept is simple: we take a room and show you three different ways you could decorate with art and accessories. We hope this will inspire you and give you confidence to do some decorating with art of your own!

Here’s the starting point for our dramatic black and white bedroom. Lauren and Courtney picked out these striking modern pieces: bed by Anthropologie, table by Room & Board, chair by Z Gallerie, and IKEA wardrobe.

.

For the third and final version of our bedroom I wanted to go for a harder, edgier look. I chose graphic, jarring artwork that has a darker (albeit whimsical) side. Clockwise from left: “Obligation” by Ken Garduno, “Nope Never Maybe” by Jason Jagel, Untitled by Julian Callos.

And here is round 3 of our black and white bedroom…

A Berlin Illustrator’s Effortlessly Stylish Home

October 8th, 2010 · 2 Comments

Sarah Illenberger‘s Berlin apartment was recently featured on design blog Freunde von Freunden. Illenberger is a “3-D” illustrator and designer (not exactly sure how that translates from German?!). She was an only child raised in Munich among a super- creative group of family friends. Sarah left Germany to study graphic design at St. Martins in London.

Illenberger’s home has the typical European architectural details (super tall ceilings, huge windows that open onto terraces) that make us Americans swoon. Sigh. But it’s Sarah’s laid-back yet sophisticated style that is a real standout. You can tell she doesn’t take decorating too seriously and is not afraid to mix furniture and accessories as she sees fit. As a result her home has tons of unique personality and is the kind of place you’d visit and never want to leave.

Changing it up at home

September 29th, 2010 · 4 Comments

Over the last couple weeks we’ve made some exciting updates to our apartment that I want to share with you all. Isn’t it fun to see a space progress over time?

Here’s what our living room looked like at the time of our Apartment Therapy house tour in July. We had a couch and rug we loved, a great piece of art but not enough furniture and seating. Plus it felt a little stuffy. .

.

And it stayed that way up until a few weeks ago when we purchased the Strut Blu Dot coffee table via Craigslist. The new coffee table is large and low to the ground which makes better use of the space and creates an informal, lounge-y vibe. The clear acrylic CB2 tables moved to the side of the room.

.

And just this week we purchased this DWR chaise lounge in “Avocado” (again via Craigslist) and rotated the existing furniture. We are digging the new arrangement! There’s more space for lounging and the cats have given it their seal of approval too.
