design crush: Mina Stores

January 18th, 2012 · 1 Comment

Mina Perhonen is a fashion and textile brand which combines Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics. Their stores in Kyoto – Kyoto Arkistot and Kyoto are bright, playful yet not-overdone. I find the spaces very inspirational and would love to see them in person some day.

Design Crush: April Hannah

April 5th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Brooklynite April Hannah has worked in acrylic and charcoal for years but has more recently ventured into large-scale sculpture and furniture. Hannah’s new work has been very well received: she recently finished an artist residency at the Museum of Arts and Design and will be participating in Wanted Design, a satellite ICFF show, May 13-16.

While many artists are fearful of venturing into the world of design, Hannah jumped right in. And what’s so cool about her sculpture and furniture is how fluently it relates to her paintings – her totems and furniture explore the same shapes and spacial concepts as her 2-D work. The idea of art in design is alive and well in Hannah’s work.

I Am An Unexpected (House) Guest

March 30th, 2011 · 5 Comments

Today I have the absolute pleasure of being an unexpected guest of Victoria of sfgirlbybay. I’ve always been a fan of her aesthetic and loved how honest, real and warm she comes across. She features interiors that are inspirational but real. And it’s always rooted by a genuine personal interest in the people who live there. Yes, I have a bit of a blogger crush on Victoria.

Going back a bit, we moved into our current apartment in Brooklyn a year and a half ago, and I’ve spent the past six months really pushing hard to get the space to where I wanted it. We’re super lucky to live in an inviting space that gets a ton of light, but it was still a difficult ongoing process figuring out how to arrange it to best fit our lifestyle and aesthetic. I’d love to say that it all came together effortlessly but that would be a total lie! Along the way there were many iterations of furniture layouts and art hanging.

Take a peak at the finished product below but be sure to check out more (including an interview) over at sfgirlbybay!

Decor Inspiration from ( Ma + Chr )

November 11th, 2010 · 1 Comment

( Ma + Chr ) is a Parisian design studio led by Mathilde Aubier and Christine Delaquaize that works on a wide range of media from web to print to textile design. Their interior design work for Au Xeme bar (photos below) is so unique and cool and hugely inspiring! ( Ma + Chr ) uses a range of fun, wacky graphics (triangles, bears, cats, eyes) to create a really cool, dynamic and inviting space. The best part is that it looks and feels totally home-grown.

I’m also digging their blog which is filled with their awe-inspiring work and snippets of random funniness!
