Artist Crush: João Rodrigues

July 9th, 2012 · No Comments

João Rodrigues is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer from Portugal. João’s work has a lot of folk art influences including the myriad surface patterns he works into his pieces. I enjoy the symmetry and decorative touches.

Artist Crush: Mark Alsweiler

August 15th, 2011 · 2 Comments

Mark Alsweiler’s work is morose and disquieting but playful in its simplicity (I confess the figure in the last painting remind me of a South Park character). Alsweiler seems highly- influenced by Mexican folk art and traditions of the dead, Wild West mythologies and ghost stories. The artist is based in Sydney.

New Work by Illustrator Olaf Hajek

November 17th, 2010 · 4 Comments

Olaf Hajek is one hell of an artist. His work is so rich and vibrant and politically resonant; his vision so strong. It turns out his work has traveled far beyond the realm of galleries and art circles. As I read on his blog, “Olaf Hajek is one of the world’s most successful illustrators. His colorful work is infused with a folkloristic naivety and freshness and can be seen in publications such as The New York Times, in advertisements for companies such as Bacardi and even on postage stamps.” And who says good artists can’t make it commercially? Hajek recently updated his website (thanks MLFU for the scoop) with new work and has prints available at Lumas Gallery.

A Little Piece of Folk Heaven

According to her etsy shop, which I stumbled upon in pure joy, Petra Hilbert is a graphic designer, artist, illustrator, writer and visionary. These paintings, which have stolen my heart, are on bamboo plates.

But there’s more: a Frida Kahlo inspired doll! My 8-year old self wants her bad!

And amazing illustrations.

Karen Barbour

The gorgeous, unusual work of California-based Karen Barbour. Her work is a combination of ink, gouache and collage on paper and has a mysterious lyrical quality that I find kind of enchanting. The artist has work for sale on Beholder.
