Ellen Leperance’s Sweater series appeared in New American Paintings #97.
“I seek out women involved in Direct Action campaigns that are wearing sweaters… I produce a grid on paper that takes into account the gauge of yarn used in the referenced sweater… I perceive the shawl paintings that I make to be death shrouds… made to assign valor to young women who have sacrificed their lives fighting for causes greater than themselves. I make this work in order to memorialize the glory of effective resistance in an effort that these moments do not vanish from popular memory…”
