Charles Yuen is a New York artist who showed at RHV Fine Art this past winter, where I discovered his dreamy work. I love everything about Yuen’s work – the comic characters, the loose but controlled brushwork, the colors which vary from subdued to outright vibrant, and the languid dream-like narratives about modern life that titillate and haunt.

True til Death
Combining abstract elements of color and composition, the artist’s deceptively simple, almost childlike figures float through scenes that echo both Freudian fantasies and real-life conundrums such as sexuality, the clash of cultures, or the “oil crisis.” – James Kalm / The Brooklyn Rail

Hairdo
Hairdo is a satirical send-up of vanity… Nestled among the pearls and bows are framed pictures of the ladies’ prized possessions—fancy shoes, a prosperous spouse, an island getaway, or smoking oil derricks… – James Kalm / The Brooklyn Rail
