An Ocean of Unsayable Things: Marjorie Dial

November 16th, 2018 · No Comments

Marjorie Dial is an artist in Portland, Oregon who didn’t discover her passion for ceramics until she hit 40. “When I first touched clay at the age of 40, I felt like I woke up from life and started dreaming.” I find it very interesting to see the shapes of her ceramic vessels translated so fluidly to prints and drawings.

“Dial’s practice is animated by the belief that we are all engaged in a deep search for meaning, connection, pleasure and purpose. Much of this seeking takes place hidden from awareness in submerged, unconscious spaces – an ocean of unsayable things that have been expelled from language… Her interests lie in giving form to – creating markers, often broken, dislocated, remnant – for what exists in shadowy places.”

Ceramics by Kristine Tillge Lund

March 18th, 2016 · No Comments

These unusual ceramic objects are by Danish artist Kristine Tillge Lund. About the series Lund states, “The objects reside between biomorphic fantasy and formal organic exploration. From a distance you get the impression that each object’s complexity is casually organised, yet when you come closer you realise the meticulous system each object depends on… The natural looking rough surfaces and colours give you a feeling of a forest, again enhancing the organic expression.”

ARtist Crush: Zimra Beiner

July 19th, 2015 · 1 Comment

Zimra Beiner is based in Ohio where he teaches ceramics at Bowling Green State University. His work is included in the Gardiner Museum’s 4th Annual “RBC Emerging Artist People’s Choice Award.” Here is a great article on Beiner’s work on C File.

“Looking, translating and making are continuously mixed together in a loop in which the boundary between art and life become tangled…I consider myself primarily an object maker, however I’ve become increasingly interested in scale, composition, and the relationship between objects to space. Therefore the way objects sit on objects, rest on the floor, and are supported in space requires careful consideration. Some of the most recent work uses wet clay, wooden boxes or books to support ceramic objects in place. The resulting still lives are a reflection on knowledge, imagination and the precarious confliction resulting from one supporting the other.” – Zimbra Beiner

Artist Crush: Georgina Corrie

June 11th, 2015 · 1 Comment

Georgina Corrie is a ceramicist in London. Her work is very simple and appears quasi-decorative. Corrie uses the loveliest colors.

“Clay is a wonderful material that has the most amazing ability to be manipulated to create a myriad of textures and surfaces even before any glaze is applied, so it is somewhat ironic that I have chosen to use it as a series of flat planes and build forms using a set square and ruler. Likewise decoration has a long history with ceramics and whilst my work frequently uses pattern and decoration on the surface it has, over time, become more pared down, now using mainly simple blocks of coloured glaze to emphasise the geometric forms. Glaze alone is such a varied and awesome material, the joy of watching two types meet and react is sometimes enough, however subtle that reaction might be.”
