Michael Cook’s series Majority Rule asks the question: “What if Indigenous people were 96 percent of the Australian population and non-Indigenous people defined as the four percent?” With a single Indigenous subject multiplied many times in each shot, these photographs place an unfamiliar face square in the territory of white men. The photographs cast the momentary illusion, with visual order and symmetry, that the minority is the majority.

Max Berry is a young artist based in Sydney. His surrealist work is intriguing but calming, in an unexpectedly soft style. Read more about the artist here.

Max Berry’s work creates a world where every object has a life of its own, a daydream land where houses talk to clouds and characters float playfully in abstracted space. Fascinated by obscure lore and strange unknown lands, his work explores the human condition in a playful journey into the surreal. – artist’s website

Australian artist Kirra Jamison’s new work on view at Sophie Gannon Gallery via Quickly Mandy. These paintings are a serious departure from the hyper-graphic, kaleidoscopic work Jamison is known for, and I absolutely love the new direction. While it may not be as distinct it feels more mature without losing its edge.

The go between
I’m digging Yvette Swan’s work – especially the fiery red, mustard and teal color palette and the intriguing graphic elements. Her work seems to dance between the realm of the real (topography, landscapes) and the abstract. Sometimes I see a coastline, others times a mountain range and other yet layers of the earth.

These are shots of Kate Tucker’s 2010 show at c3 Contemporary Artspace, a non-profit art space in Melbourne via allthemountains. Tucker will be showing at c3 again this May/June and at Edwina Corlette in the fall… can’t wait to see what this talented artist (and new mom) has been working on!
