This is the first of a new series which will be about the artwork I feature on Buy Some Damn Art!
Today on BSDA we launched a show by Ohio-based artist Adrienne Slane whose collages are made from books from the 1700s to the mid 1900s. I first fell in love with the graceful, pious ladies in Adrienne’s work. In each collage these serene religious figures seem to float in time and space amidst a bevy of beautiful creatures and objects. Adrienne combines unusual themes that do not seem to go together but that surprisingly, due to her meticulous construction and singular vision, work very well visually. When I asked her about marrying the “majestic (butterflies, flowers, the Virgin Mary) with the grotesque (a human heart, an eyeball)” she responded:
“I find an eyeball just as majestic as a butterfly. I celebrate the interconnectivity of nature, the fact that everything is made with the same building blocks. Creation and decay, the majestic and the grotesque are all intertwined… As I’ve been creating collages, I’ve noticed, too, how different forms mirror each other, for example, a butterfly with the same shape as the human pelvic bone or an eyeball resembling the form of a certain seedpod. I am really attracted to those similarities.”
