Artist Crush: Anders Arhøj

Monday, January 7, 2013

Anders Arhøj is the creator of ORB, an art object / piggy bank. The objects, which are playful in function but sophisticated in form, are made from stoneware and glazed. Don’t they look lovely in a group? Arhøj says he was inspired by a fortune teller’s crystal ball, but I also see these as bowling balls and gumdrops. The raw finishes remind me of Edith Heath and her experimental work with finishes and glazes.

And here is the “Ghosts” project Arhøj did with Louise Gaarmann which is based on the “ideas of the Japanese Shinto religion believing that everything in nature has a soul.”

Artist Crush: Laurel Sparks

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Works on paper by Brooklyn artist Laurel Sparks. These gridded and heavily-intersected pieces are quite cool…  some are all about geometry and hard lines, others incorporate a melange of shapes and patterns for an almost Art Deco vibe. Klimt certainly comes to mind with the last piece.

Nobuhito Nishigawara – Persona

Monday, December 10, 2012

I came across this exhibit by Nobuhito Nishigawara by chance walking through the Lower East Side. I don’t have any strong attachment to Asian art but the metal and terracotta animal sculpture I saw at Tally Beck captured my heart. The playful and quirky conception of each animal is nothing if not fresh and inspiring while the materials and basic iconography, on the other hand, reference historical art of both Japan and the ancient world.

Artist Crush: Gabriel Jesiolowski

Friday, December 7, 2012

Gabriel Jesiolowski is an artist/ poet/ curator with an impressive body of work that is part-installation, part-performance art, part-photography and often includes poetry. Gabriel explores “theories of embodiment, transgendered subjectivity and questions of uprooting and regrounding” in his art. What stands out most to me about Gabriel is that he is an imaginative maker and creator of his own iconography.
