Update with Kimberly Corday

April 15th, 2017 · 2 Comments

Kimberly Corday has a new body of textile work called Pelage.

“My process is Frankensteinian.  Borrowing aspects of weaving, embroidery, and collage, I make textured objects that conjure up an amalgam of natural phenomena like threadbare pelts, nests, or overgrown brush.

In this new body of work I dye, distress, and manipulate an assortment of textiles in a ritual that yields wall hangings both romantic and primitive. Much like the preserved textiles of a bygone era, this series spotlights organic, sometimes misshapen forms as well as the relationship between beauty and decay.”

Artist Crush: Sara Nilsson

February 3rd, 2017 · No Comments

Sara Nilsson is a Swedish artist based in Olsäter whose sculpture, made of layers and layers of paper, incorporates playful elements of illustration and painting. Nilsson’s subjects are immersed in a friendly, alternate natural world that promises their own personal fulfillment. “Her work portrays people who have flocked into the environment… Individuals who go their own way, follow their hearts, are strong in themselves. Their backpacks are packed with courage, dreams and longings. In their world, everything hangs together.” – Galleri Thomassen

Portraits by Klodin Erb

January 23rd, 2017 · No Comments

Swiss artist Klodin Erb’s work is dark, playful and disjointed. Her paintings catch and hold the eye with their mix of refinement (including references to classical paintings) and crude ugliness.

Artist Crush: Patricia Hagen

January 17th, 2017 · 2 Comments

I found Patricia Hagen’s stylized landscapes, seascapes actually, in one of my favorite art publications, New American Paintings issue #127. Quite simply I like the artist’s crude, dark outlines and thick wavy lines of sky, water and land. There is an innocence in these works – as if seeing the world through the eyes of a child who has reduced a complicated landscape into a simple, understandable lexicon. Hagen has an MFA from California College of the Arts and resides in Seattle.

Artist Crush: Marc Etherington

December 14th, 2016 · No Comments

Marc Etherington is a self-taught artist based in Sydney I came across on Instagram. One thing I love about self-taught art is the honesty, stripped of pretense and Marc’s work definitely fits in that category. It doesn’t sugarcoat the human condition – the petty battles we wage, the hopeless way we see ourselves at the center of everything.

Etherington references iconic American pop culture in his paintings including scenes from The Big Lebowski, Fargo and No Country For Old Men.
