Under the Guise of Play: Ulla Jokisalo

Monday, September 28, 2015 · 1 Comment

Ulla Jokisalo is a well-known Finnish artist based in Helsinki. The works I selected below are from a number of Jokisalo’s exhibitions including Intentions – Under the Guise of Play, Scratch It, Stitch It, Cut It, Keep It and From the Collection Headless Women.

“In Jokisalo’s artworks the entire span of human life, its hopes and aspirations, is revealed under the guise of play. The very nature of play makes it possible for the worlds of the real and the imaginary to meet; allowing room for the temptations of the frightening and the dangerous… A major source of inspiration… [is] 19th-century children’s literature… the sombre, black-and-white illustrations, the cruelty of the details… The [artist’s] recent works can also be seen as a dialogue with the traditions of illustrating and storytelling in old literature.”   –  Anna-Kaisa Rastenberger, Finnish Museum of Photography
