LA-based artist Mel Kadel has an upcoming show at Merry Karnowsky and was recently interviewed in her studio by Milk Made. Kadel draws on coffee-stained paper and painstakingly cuts out and re-applies patterned details in what look to me like mini-stage sets. I really enjoyed what the artist had to say about the ubiquitous mop-headed character in her work.
“I think it’s inevitable that I interject myself into the character, so there is a reflection of me, although she doesn’t act as a self portrait. There is a lot of emotional content that I relate to her on, and in a weird way she sort of keeps me in check because she’s such a survivor. So, even though I make up her world, she helps me in return.” – Mel Kadel via Milk Made
