Animated GIFs: The Birth of a Medium

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 · 3 Comments

Someone alerted to me to PBS’ web series Off Book and its latest episode Animated GIFs: The Birth of a Medium. I’m fascinated with internet culture, especially how the internet has turned the dynamics around consuming art on its head. It seems a lot of important cultural shifts are overlooked by the media so kudos to PBS for delivering this timely, relevant content.

The GIFs below, or cinemagraphs, as some like to call them are by Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg. This brand of GIFs is a far cry from the simple pixelated numbers we all remember from the 90’s, and, as emphasized in the episode, is blurring the line between internet meme and fine art.

Brings to mind Reed and Rader and Rafael Rozendaal, both of which make really fun work. Nice post. I hadn’t heard the term Cinegraphs before. Interesting.
