Missed Connections

Many of you have probably heard of Sophie Blackwell’s brilliant “Missed Connections” series which was featured on the NY Times, but in case you haven’t here’s a short intro. Blackwell is a Brooklyn-based illustrator whose inspiration comes from an unlikely source: Craigslist. In her “Missed Connections” series Sophie illustrates messages left for strangers in the hope of connecting with them again. It’s a wonderful example of the intersection of old media (painting) and new (online social networks).

.

Not only is the idea of the series genius, but Sophie brings such humanity and charm to what could be construed as a kind of creepy cultural phenomenon. (I mean, leaving messages for people on the internet based on glances on the subway…) Regardless, what resonates in this series is the vulnerability, optimism and desire for closeness that Sophie perceives (and depicts) in these anonymous messages.
